Most Expensive Paintings Ever Sold.

When Pablo Picasso’s greatest work Les Femmes d’Alger (“Version O”) sold for $179 million last year (2015), everyone get shocked that how could people spend such money on paintings! It hammered all the record for a painting sold at auction. But guy’s chill… that is not the highest priced paintings all over! That was number 7 only! There is another six masterpiece which sold on private sale.

Here is the top 10 most expensive paintings sold in the world.

10. Top 10 Most Expensive Paintings | Woman III

Price: $161.4 Million

Buyer: Steven A. Cohen (November 18, 2006)

This painting was a part of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art Collection from late 70s to 1994. After the Iranian revolution in 1979, the government set some strict rules about the visual arts. Therefore the painting was disappear form the people for providing nudity. At last in 1994 it quietly comes to David Geffen.

Woman III is the number third of a series of six paintings by de Kooning. It was painted between 1951 and 1953. Finally David Geffen sold it to Steven A. Cohen on November 18, 2008.

Jackson Pollock is an American Painter created his masterpiece in 1948. It shows an abstract expression on it. It was created on fiberboard which is also known as composition board. If you carefully look on this painting you’ll see gray, brown, yellow and white color are used on it, and you’ll find a similarity to “dense bird’s nest”.

In January 1949 it was first shown a gallery. On that day Alfonso A. Ossorio decided to purchase it. The painting sold by $1500 only!

Amedeo Modigliani is an Italian artist. In 1917 he create his masterpiece Nu couché or in English as Red Nude. The painting is done only oil on canvas. In that year it was first shown on a gallery. That was the first and last art gallery of Modigliani. Police shut down his gallery permanently for making nude paintings. But last year (2015) it makes an history on auction market!

Picasso’s masterpiece Les Femmes d’Alger (Women of Algiers) was painted in 1955. It is a series of 15 paintings. The series named as Version C, H, J, K, L, M, N, O, and P respectively. The entire series was bought by Victor and Sally Ganz in June 1956. That time he paid $212,500 to Picasso. All the paintings becomes multimillion dollar painting now. But ‘version O’ breaks all the record. It was sold for $179.4 million! It’s the most expensive paintings ever sold in a public auction!

Rembrandt sixteenth centuries work. This is a pair of full length wedding portraits. It was owned by Rothschild Family. Presently there is two joint owner. Louvre Museum and Rijksmuseum. Both of them contribute half of the price value in 2015.

Yes this one is a masterpiece of French Artist Paul Cézanne. The Card Players is a series of five oil paintings. The Royal Family of Qatar brought this for a price between $250 million to $300 million.

In 1891 Paul travelled to Tahiti. That was his first time visit. He searching a place where he can paint his best of paintings. He thought Tahiti might be the place like a paradise. But when he reached Tahiti he saw the life of native people. It was not like that he imagined. People died in disease. He felt sorrow for the native women. He saw a large number of widows. Then he took his canvas and start painting. In 2015 State of Qatar bought this piece for a record breaking price.
