The latest example of this is guru Ram Rahim, who raped a girl 15 years ago, hearing the news that he might be punished for years , his thousands of fanatic follower started ruthless massacre in Haryana. 10.Sant Rampal –
The list of top 10 most controversial gurus in India starts with Sant Rampal, as he is called by his followers set up Satlok Ashram in 1999 after he came in contact with a seer named Ramdevanand. Soon, he had a number of followers and began opening ashrams all over Haryana.His legal woes began in 2006 when he clashed with supporters of Arya Samaj founder Swami Dayanand Saraswati and which led to the death of one person. Since then, Rampal, who faces contempt of court, murder and attempt to murder cases in various courts, has skipped hearings 42 times. Rampal’s ashram has witnessed violent clashes as his supporters have been refusing the police entry into the guarded fortress and which also led to the deaths of six devotees.
Narayan Sai is the 41-year-old son of spiritual leader Asaram Bapu. Sai was charged with sexual abuse when a Surat-based woman filed a FIR against him accusing him of exploitation and repeated rapes between 2002 and 2005. He had also admitted that he had a physical relationship with eight other followers in different parts of the country. Sai was also accused of bribing local authorities by detaining him in custody in an attempt to have the case of sexual abuse against him weakened or dismissed. The Gujarat police estimate that Narayan Sai has properties and investments worth more than Rs. 5,000 crore.
8.Jayendra Saraswati –
Jayendra Saraswati is the sixty-ninth Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. The Shankaracharya attracted controversy when he left his mutt in 1987 during the Chaturmasya vrata and was not traceable for a few weeks. Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswati and his junior Vijayendra are the prime accused in the murder of Sankararaman, the manager of the Varadaraja Perumal temple at Kanchipuram, in September 3, 2004. Another case of “attempted murder” was filed by an auditor, Radhakrishnan, in Chennai. He alleged that Jayendra Saraswathi sent thugs home to kill him because he had questioned the 83 kilograms of gold missing for the Kamakshi Temple in Kanchipuram.
His association with former PM Prime Minister Narasimha Rao brought Chandraswami – the controversial tantrik – into prominence. Curiously, the godman’s finances have fluctuated with his political fortune. Chandraswami has been accused of several financial irregularities and was ordered by the Supreme Court to pay a fine in several cases of violation of the Law of Management of Currencies registered by the Direction of Application. The ED has imposed a total penalty of Rs 9 crore (approximately) in Chandraswami on 13 cases of violations of the Exchange Regulation Act for acquiring foreign currency in contravention of the Law. In 1996, he was arrested on charges of defrauding a London-based businessman of $100,000. CBI has lodged a cheating case and a case for his involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1996.
6.Swami Premananda –
Swami Premananda is a sadhu of Tiruchirapally ashram in Tamil Nadu. He was accused of raping 13 women. He was accused of killing a Sri Lankan man, Ravi, who had been living in the Ashram for a short period of time. Medical tests confirmed that she raped the 13 girls. Swami Premananda and six others were arrested and imprisoned in November 1994. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in 1997 by the Sessions Court in Pudukkottai, the Chennai High Court (in 2002), and then the Supreme Court (in 2005) confirmed the Judgment. Premananda died on 21 February 2011 due to illness.
5.Swami Nithyananda –
He is Popular for his spiritual discourses and meditation programmes, Swami Nithyananda was named as one of the 100 most spiritually influential living people in the world by Watkins’Mind Body Spirit magazine. Swami Paramahamsa Nithyananda landed in a storm after a news channel telecast video footage purportedly showing him in a sex romp with an actress. The video was of Nithyananda and a South Indian actress Ranjitha, Swami Nithyananda was also accused of rape by Indian-born American citizen, Arthi Rao, in June 2012.
4.Sathya Sai Baba –
4th place is acquired by Sathya Sai Baba in the list of top 10 most controversial gurus in India, who passed away in 2011, ruled the hearts of his devotees through many social service endeavors such as building multi-specialty hospitals offering free treatment, schools and colleges, among others. However, his life and times were also marked by several serious disputes involving accusations of pretending “miracles”, sexual abuse and even pedophilia. Sai Baba has been accused, nationally and internationally, of the veracity of his “miracles”, whether producing sacred ashes or vibhuti, gold ornaments and rings of the air. The greatest controversy of the Prashanti Nilayam ashram was on June 6, 1993, when four people were shot to death by police after stabbing four devotees in Baba’s bedroom, killing two and injuring them seriously two others. There have also been allegations of misappropriation of funds in the name of donations in the operation of the Rs 40,000 crore Sathya Sai Baba trust.
3.Baba Ramdev –
Baba Ramdev is best known for popularising yoga and has been very vocal about political issues in the country. Here are the controversies wrapped him. Senior leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist Brinda Karat accused the Divya Pharmacy, owned by Ramdev’s Divya Yog Mandir Trust, of using human and animal bones in their medicines. The yoga guru has claimed that regular practice pranayama popularised by him has successfully ‘cured’ cancer within six to nine months. Cancer of the breast, liver, prostate, uterus, pituitary gland, brain tumour and even leukaemia, can be cured by practising the breathing exercises, he claimed. “Sex education in schools need to be replaced by yoga education,” Ramdev also told reporters. “The government should stop polluting the minds of innocent young children with sex education”. Ramdev has contended that homosexuality is a disease that is curable through yogic practices. Recently researchers of food dept of India found harmful ingredients in his amla products and these made him to hold the 3rd position in the list of top 10 most controversial gurus in India.
2.Asaram Bapu –
We have Asaram Bapu in 2nd place in this list of top 10 most controversial gurus in India. This controversial godman hit the nerve of every rational Indian when making a remark on the 2012 Delhi gangrape saying that the girl raped was also to be blamed. He further added that the girl “should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop… This could have saved her dignity and life.” To exemplify his hideous theory he said “Can one hand clap? I don’t think so.” Born in Sind in undivided India, today Asaram Bapu has over 425 ashrams and more than 50 gurukuls all over, and a tremendous following both in India and abroad. Asaram Bapu was accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl at his Jodhpur ashram even as her mother was waiting outside. He was served a summons in the case by the Jodhpur police at his ashram in Indore. The police had earlier served a summons to his officials at his Ahmedabad ashram. The godman claimed he was innocent and regards the minor as his “daughter”. The ministry of corporate affairs said it had received complaints against him and his son in an alleged 700-acre land-grabbing case and the serious frauds investigation office is looking into the matter.
1.Gurmeet Ram Rahim –
The man who topped the list of top 10 most controversial gurus in India Gurmeet Ram Rahim. Dera Sacha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was charged by CBI in a rape case. He was charged with sexually assaulting women followers of the Dera at the sect’s Sirsa-based headquarters and the CBI is also investigating two more charges against him for his alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy against Dera manager Ranjit Singh and a Sirsa-based journalist, Ram Chander Chhatrapati. On 28 August 2017 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape by a judge who flew by government helicopter to conduct court at a prison in Haryana’s Rohtak. Previously his followers went on a deadly rampage after he was convicted on Friday, with 38 people killed and over 200 injured in the violence.
